Slate Smithery — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the age requirement?
All classes at Slate Smithery are for adults 18 and older.
Due to the use of torches, sharp tools, and studio equipment, minors are not permitted at this time.
Do I need any prior experience?
No experience is required.
Beginner classes are designed for those with no previous jewelry-making experience. All techniques are demonstrated step by step in a supportive, small-group setting.
Can anyone do this?
Yes — jewelry-making is a learned skill, not a talent you’re born with.
Classes are paced for beginners and focused on learning through hands-on practice.
If you have concerns about physical limitations or accessibility, please reach out prior to booking so we can discuss accommodations.
What will I make in class?
Each class focuses on specific techniques and projects.
Learning, ring making bezel set stones and piercing and sawing. All the basics to get you started in your journey.
What is included with the class?
All tools, equipment, and basic supplies used during class are provided.
Any included materials (such as silver or stones) will be clearly outlined in the class description.
What should I wear?
Please wear:
• Closed-toe shoes
• Comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting a little dusty
Long hair should be tied back. Loose or flowing sleeves are not recommended.
Do I need to bring anything?
No tools are required.
If you wear reading glasses or prefer your own eye protection for close work, feel free to bring them.
Is a waiver required?
Yes. All students must complete a waiver prior to attending class.
A waiver link is included in your confirmation email after registration.
How many students are in each class?
Class sizes are intentionally kept small to ensure individual attention, safety, and a focused learning environment.
Can I cancel or reschedule my class?
Because classes involve limited seating and material preparation, all class registrations are non-refundable.
If you are unable to attend, please contact us as soon as possible. Transfers or rescheduling may be offered on a case-by-case basis if space allows, but cannot be guaranteed.
What if I’m running late?
Please plan to arrive 5–10 minutes early.
Late arrivals may miss important safety instruction and may not be able to participate fully.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes, private lessons may be available on a limited basis.

Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes. Gift certificates are available and can be used toward classes or future offerings.
Will you offer more advanced classes?
Yes. Intermediate and advanced classes, as well as continued education workshops, will be offered as the studio schedule expands.
Can I take photos or videos during class?
You are welcome to take photos of your own work.
Please be respectful of other students’ privacy and avoid photographing others without permission.
Is the studio accessible?

Parking is available inside the gated lot to the left of the building.
